The Carl Zeiss Industrial Metrology Division (Maple Grove, Minnesota) recently reached a new milestone, having surpassed 5,000 computed tomography (CT) scans performed for customers.
Offered to help customers determine the best measuring strategy for their products, CT scans can reduce the qualification process to a day’s work, the company says. The non-destructive, 3D part scans enable internal and external analysis of a workpiece via x-ray technology similar to that used in computed axial tomography (CAT) technology. They are typically used for internal assembly analysis, part-to-CAD deviation comparison, defect analysis, first-article inspection layout, PPAP (production part approval process) and verification of key product characteristics. Scanned workpieces are typically constructed from plastic, ceramics, composites, magnesium or aluminum.
