More than 125 teams are due to compete in the IMechE’s five-day Formula Student event (14-18 July) at Silverstone Racing Circuit. This is the highest number in the 13-year history of the competition (www.formulastudent.com), and teams will travel from Australia, Canada, India, Sweden and Croatia to take part. The picture shows the University of Hertfordshire FS teams.
Formula Student challenges the next generation of engineers to drive a single-seater racing car that they have designed and built from scratch. The aim is to help them develop academic, vocational and practical engineering skills. In addition to racing the cars, the students must present their designs to a group of judges drawn from industry and motor sport.
The 2010 competition has a record number of entries for all of its categories, which include Class 1A for low-carbon vehicles. This was won by the University of Hertfordshire’s electric car last year. This year, for the first time, all Class 1A cars will be fitted with an electric box to measure the current and voltage passing between the battery and the drive motor, to determine their electrical consumption.
Formula Student chairman Jon Hilton says: “The development of low-carbon technologies and alternative fuels in a motor-sport environment like FS is extremely fast, and everything can be directly transferred to road vehicles. It will be up to this next generation of engineers to solve problems surrounding vehicle emissions and alternative energy, and the Formula Student competition gives them the skills they need to achieve this. We have deliberately put few restrictions in the rules, and these students are pushing the boundaries with some very exciting technology.”
