It is just over a year since business partners Graham Thomas and Chris Poole purchased the design and manufacturing rights for the award-winning range of Yorky Type O oil-field grinders, and they recently delivered their fifth machine.
Mr Thomas, managing director of Broadbent Stanley Ltd in Sowerby Bridge, and Mr Poole, managing director of the nearby GAC Group, built their latest Yorky for the Baker Oil Tools facility in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The order came to them via Mobar Ltd, the Aberdeen-based machine tool sales and service specialist. Arthur Mowat takes up the story: “We were asked to locate an oil-field grinder, so we contacted a number of companies in order to evaluate their products. It soon became apparent that the Yorky stood head and shoulders above the competition, so we had no qualms in recommending it. It was the only purpose-designed heavy-duty machine with a hollow spindle and a traversing wheel-head, rather than the old-fashioned and somewhat cumbersome traversing-table type.”
As the Baku application involved mainly one-off fishing tools, the manual version was deemed ideal. Optional equipment included an internal attachment for grinding the fishing-tool bores and a series of quills to grind from 1in to 6in (in 1in increments).
