Cutting-tool supplier Sandvik Coromant recently opened officially a global application centre for deep-hole machining (DHM) at Cirencester in Gloucestershire, UK. The centre was established following the company’s acquisition and consolidation of BTA Heller Drilling Systems Ltd., a supplier of deep-hole-drilling products, in early 2009.
The Cirencester facility will be used to develop new and innovative DHM techniques for customers in the power generation, aerospace, and oil and gas industries. It will also serve as a useful interface for research institutes, machine tool manufacturers and universities that want to conduct tests and undertake studies on particular components.
“Sandvik Coromant has identified a market need to offer cost-effective machining solutions for components that are normally manufactured by deep-hole-drilling techniques,” explains Mike Walker, the company’s global business development manager for deep-hole machining. “These components are becoming more complicated and require new products and solutions for additional operations that are not currently available on the market. To this end, Sandvik Coromant intends to widen its offer and position itself as a supplier of deep-hole-machining solutions.”
Sandvik Coromant will increase its investment in R&D, appoint and train product specialists, and develop new processes to maximize productivity and quality in the manufacture of complex components.
The new facility includes a specialized deep-hole-drilling machine capable of internal profiling and chamber boring, a small turning centre for machining guide pads, and measuring equipment for setting tools and checking component features. Data output from the drilling machine will enable the metal-cutting processes to be recorded and analyzed as operations are going on, and copies of the data record will be available so that any future replications of the processing can be measured against a benchmark.
