Weldex International, of Inverness, has 13 cranes working flat out at the Olympic Stadium in London for the 2012 games on contracts worth several million pounds. Weldex, the biggest independent crawler-crane operator in the UK, is bucking the trend against a backdrop of Scottish firms saying they are not securing work in the huge Olympic project. A 650-tonne Weldex crane last week lifted a 92ft tower into place 197ft above the athletics arena.
“It went without a hitch,” said managing director Doug McGilvray, “and that’s just the first of 14 such towers we’re putting in place. The height is needed for high-definition TV footage and for lighting to avoid dazzling competitors, spectators and photographers. We’ve been working at the Olympic Stadium for 15 months and currently have 13 cranes and 25 engineers and operatives on the project. Some of the cranes are working 24hr a day to ensure schedules are met. We’ll be flat out on Olympic Games work until the end of August.”
Weldex has also won a contract worth more than £3.5 million for the Walney wind farm off the Cumbria coast. The company has been awarded two years’ work by Dong Energy (a Danish company) and Siemens. Mr McGilvray said these contract wins showed the value of the company’s decision to spend millions modernising its fleet. It now has 110 cranes that are on average less than five years old.
